In terms of biodiversity and culture, islands are places that tend to be distinct from the connected masses around them. You might find things on an island that you won't on mainland only a few miles away.

Thousands of years ago, Glastonbury and other places of habitation in the Somerset Levels were islands, isolated by the inland sea. They haven't been that way for millennia, but echoes of that disconnection somehow remain.
